Modern bicycle disc brakes have great stopping power in both wet and dry conditions. Previously the tech for mountain bikers, disc brakes are a more and more common sight on road bikes and hybrids…..but they do require regular maintenance. This fluid came out of a hard-ridden MTB; the bike wasn’t in for a brake service, but when giving it a check-over, there was a significant amount of play in the rear brake lever….enough to investigate further….. this was what greeted me.
Better……but this is still not good! The ‘brake soup” is looking slightly less ominous, but this is still far darker that I’d like to see – this photo was taken after a full syringe of new mineral oil had been pushed through the lines……
After a significant amount of fluid flushed through the system, this is how it should look! Both Mountain bikes and road bikes benefit from regular maintenance, be it the drive-train to help you go faster, or the brakes to help you stop faster. If you’ve not had your brakes checked for a while (really, 12 months??), or they’re just not performing as you once remember, then give me a call and I can service the whole braking system from replacing pads, to cleaning calipers and discs and replacing the brake-fluids too.
